How do I price my rewards?
Determining how many points your rewards should "cost" to redeem in Hilight can be tricky, but we are here to help!
Most important tip to remember! When setting up your rewards, aim for a balance. Include some low-cost, easy-win rewards that your staff can redeem quickly to build excitement and momentum. At the same time, make sure you also have a few higher-value rewards that staff can save up for over time. These bigger rewards help drive long-term engagement, and since staff may be working toward them for weeks or months, it’s best not to raise the price of those later in the year.
How Hilight's Points Work
Hilight users earn points to spend in the Rewards Marketplace when they receive and send hilights. When a user receives a hilight, they earn one hilight point. When a user sends 5 hilights, they also earn a point.
However, there are some limits on the number of hilight "points" that a user can send to other users in your district. Users start every week with 25 hilight "points to send." The logic behind the number 25 is that if Hilight is fully integrated into a school’s culture, then a highly-engaged user will give recognition about 5 times a day during the school week. If a user runs out of hilight points to give during the week (meaning they have sent 25 hilights so far that week), they can still give a hilight, the recipient just will not earn a hilight point. This 25 point "sending limit" is intended to serve as a sending goal for each week to motivate your staff, but also to put some guardrails on the number of points your staff can accrue and spend on the rewards you are offering.
School Admin and District Admin users have unlimited "points to send each week." They do not have the 25 point sending limit!
Since we expect users to be giving recognition daily, users are expected to accrue hilights quickly, so how do you choose how much a reward should cost?
Pricing a reward
When a school is first getting started on Hilight, before it is fully integrated into the school’s culture and users’ daily routines, we expect that users might not give out 20-25 hilights each week. In the early stages, the range is more likely to be around 5–10 hilights per week. Therefore, in a school’s first few semesters or year of using Hilight, we suggest pricing your rewards slightly lower. Below we’ve suggested reward prices based on a few scenarios, a school new to Hilight, a school familiar with Hilight, and a school fully integrated with Hilight.
Higher valued rewards should be priced higher so that a teacher or staff member has to accrue and save their hilights to earn them. In addition to pricing a high value reward at a higher cost, you can also limit the number of times a reward can be redeemed.
